About Us

The Marches Scribes group was founded in 1992 by a small number of artists with a shared love of calligraphy. Though we came from all over the country, our interest sustained the group, which thrived and now boasts a membership of nearly 50 from up and down the border including Herefordshire, Shropshire, Powys, Monmouth, Worcestershire and Kidderminster.

We run regular workshops around calligraphy but also bookbinding and other similar arts and crafts. Whatever level you are, whether you know your serif from your flourish, you’re welcome to join us.

Over the years we have organised workshops on a number of topics, including bookbinding, making scrolls and little books, studied and practised many different calligraphy scripts, from cadels to flourished italic, copperplate to contemporary cnut. Other recent sessions have covered a wide range of topics like lettercutting in stone, writing on fabric, white on white, papermaking, gilding, textures and surfaces, layout and design, colour, ruling pens, maps and plans, pointed brushwork, layering with resist, and illumination.

The group is open to newcomers and beginners and all receive a friendly welcome. To find out more about coming to a workshop or joining the group, get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.
